I've been loading 9mm with HS-6 for a little while. Although it burns slower, requiring more powder to get the same velocity, it is pretty similar to Hogdon's TiteGroup powder, which I've been using for a couple years, and something like six thousands rounds.
I like it enough that I think I'll stop using Alliant Blue Dot powder when the jar runs empty. HS-6 is popular among USPSA open class shooters for loading 9mm Major loads, while Blue Dot was given up on years ago, because there were some KaBooms.
HS-6 and Winchester 540 powders are the same.

I'm thinking seriously about trying the same powder. Given that your post has some age on it, can you comment on your satisfaction level?
Also, for 9mm, you owe it to yourself to try VihtaViori 3N37. VERY good velocities, VERY clean burning, VERY good metering characteristics. Only drawback is the price, and sometimes, availability.

It fills an important niche for me, hot pistol ammo. Like you said, Vit 3n37 or 3n38 is similar, but cleaner, I just can't afford to use it in large quantities.
There are a few other powders in the same category as HS-6, but I can't get hold of them on a regular basis. Longshot I can get, and it works well for 9mm Major, but it's loud.
I'm going to keep using HS-6 until I'm forced to switch.
